Transition Times

Re-Membering Anticarceral Resistance in the Tenderloin

In 2024, I designed and oversaw production of Transition Times: Re-Membering Anti-Carceral Resistance in the Tenderloin, a limited edition exhibition catalog with a double-sided risograph-printed insert poster, for release at the opening of TurkxTaylor Initiative’s exhibition, Transition Times, at the Tenderloin Museum in San Francisco.

This exhibition centered around a four-story building on the corner of Turk and Taylor in the Tenderloin District—the site of the 1966 Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, a queer grassroots uprising against police brutality—which is currently occupied by GEO Group, a for-profit prison corporation.

Featuring a curated selection of archival materials from historian Susan Styker’s personal collection, alongside essays by six trans writers and activists, this book examines and contextualizes the legacy of the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, inviting the reader to liberate trans history by imagine an alternative futures for the historical site.
