Sick Fest takes a radical and participatory approach to exploring what it means to be a sick person under capitalism.
"How do you throw a brick through the window of a bank if you can't get out of bed?" This question is posed by LA-based writer and activist Johanna Hedva, author of Sick Woman Theory, a powerful polemic that identifies "sickness" as an invention and requirement of capitalism, ensuring that certain people, already historically oppressed, stay invisible and uncared for. Sick Fest is Hedva’s first Bay Area appearance, and will be the debut of her latest work on Sick Woman Theory.
Sick Fest will feature performances and readings by a group of chronically ill and disabled writers and activists, including keynote speaker Johanna Hedva, author of Sick Woman Theory, as well as Neve Be, Carolyn Lazard, Kiyaan Abadani, Claire Light, Liz Henry, and Amy Berkowitz, and work by Mia Mingus. A group conversation, a chronic illness zine fair, and bodywork by donation will round out the evening.
