Communicator Series is giving parasocial embodiment. This event invites manuel arturo abreu, Creighton Baxter, and Selby Sohn to create performances-by-proxy, entangled gestures to be enacted by Los Angeles-based artists…and you. Tuesday February 11th, 7:30pm at Poetic Research Bureau

About the Artists

Selby Sohn is a Bay Area artist who creates objects and actions on the brink of utility. They have exhibited nationally, internationally, and in outer space. Right now, their work is on a NASA PACE-1 satellite orbiting Earth. They have also shown work at di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, 500 Capp Street, the de Young Museum, A|AH|D Gallery, Dream Farm Commons, Liminal Space, Bass and Reiner, 4 Star Theater, NIAD Art Center, Berkeley Art Center, Root Division, Wave Collective Space, Cone Shape Top, the Edouard de Merlier Gallery, Mini Mart, Mercury 20 Gallery, The Search, Thee Stork Club, ATA Window Gallery, Developing Environments, Pacific Art League, SOMArts, East Window, the City of Palo Alto Public Art Program, Fish Factory Art Space in Cornwall, UK, and Supermarket in Stockholm, Sweden. Creighton Baxter is an artist exploring temporality, remembrance, and the sensorium through transforming images and gestures with repetition. She has created commissioned performances for Boston University and The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA; and has participated in exhibitions at Andrew Kreps Gallery, David Castillo, and Allen Memorial Art Museum amongst others. Baxter has contributed illustrations to The Yale Review and Duke University Press, and produced writing for Et al Projects, JB Blunk Estate, and Telematic Media Arts. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

Arianne Ayu Alizio is a poet, filmmaker, and capricorn many times over. They are pursuing a dual MFA in Film Directing and Creative Writing at CalArts, and hold a BFA in Film & TV Production from NYU Tisch. Arianne received The Poetry Project’s 2022 Brannan Prize and was a top 10 finalist for Palette Poetry’s 2023 Rising Poets Prize. They’ve screened and performed at St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery, Institute of American Indian Arts, BLUM, Philosophical Research Society, Garel Fine Art Gallery, plus many rooftops, farms, bookstores, and bars. You may also know Arianne as the founder of Film Spells, a workshop and screening series for psychic storytellers.

manuel arturo abreu (*1991 Santo Domingo) is a non-disciplinary artist working with what is at hand in a process of magical thinking with attention to ritual aspects of aesthetics. They have recently exhibited at Konrad Fischer Galerie (Düsseldorf), Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts project space (NYC), the Portland Art Museum, SIMIAN (Copenhagen), Kunstverein München (Munich), Bergen Kunsthall, Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler (Berlin), HALLE FÜR KUNST Steiermark (Graz), Veronica project space (Seattle), and Kunstraum Niederösterreich (Vienna).
